Cateva informatii suplimentare:

Common Name: Hart's tongue fern
Genus: Asplenium
Species: scolopendrium
Skill Level: Experienced
Exposure: Partial shade, Shade
Hardiness: Hardy
Soil type: Well-drained/light, Moist, Boggy
Height: 60cm
Spread: 60cm
Time to divide plants: March to May
USDA Zone 5 (down to -29°C)

The evergreen hart's tongue fern grows wild in shaded areas, often forming large 'drifts' under trees amongst rocks and streams where its upright pointed 'tongues' contrast strikingly with the softer shapes of damp-loving wild flowers. In gardens, the plants are good for shaded wild gardens, and are also invaluable for year-round interest amongst shrubs or other shade and moisture-loving perennials. Once planted, hart's tongue fern grows slowly and needs little attention apart from annual mulching and tidying in spring. The Royal Horticultural Society has given it its prestigious Award of Garden Merit (AGM).
Hart’s tongue fern is the only hardy fern with entire edge. There are not individual leaflets as on other species but one wide, bright green and glossy leaf. They respond well to fertilizing: the more nutrients – the bigger leaves.

Aceasta este a doua feriga hardy, Asplenium trichomanes

Imagine

Cateva informatii:

Characteristics
It is hardy to USDA zone 6 (-26C). It grows in tufts from a short rhizome. The fronds are long and narrow, gradually tapering towards the tip. They are simply divided into small, yellow-green to dark-green pinnae. The stipe and rachis of the frond are dark all along their length. The fronds can reach 40 cm in length but are more commonly 8-20 cm. They bear long, narrow sori which contain the spores.

The plant prefers light (sandy) and medium (loamy) soils and requires well-drained soil. The plant prefers acid, neutral and basic (alkaline) soils. It can grow in full shade (deep woodland) or semi-shade (light woodland). It requires moist soil.

Subspecies
There are two important subspecies that could be considered separate species because they cannot interbreed to produce fertile offspring. The first, Asplenium trichomanes L. ssp. trichomanes, is a diploid, while the second, Asplenium trichomanes L. ssp. quadrivalens D. E. Meyer (1962) is a tetraploid. A. t. subsp. trichomanes is a delicate plant with a slender stipe and rachis and relatively few pinnae, and grows on sandstone and similar acid to subacid rock. A. t. subsp. quadrivalens is stouter and has more pinnae which are more square in shape and have less of a stalk, and grows on limestone and other calcareous rock. The fronds tend to grow close to the rock while those of A. t. subsp. trichomanes tend to arch away. There are several other named subspecies, as well. A. t. subsp. pachyrachis is small and delicate, grows close to the rock and has a rigid, fragile stipe and rachis.

Distribution and habitat
It is widespread in temperate and subarctic areas and also occurs in mountainous regions in the tropics. Its range includes most of Europe and much of Asia south to Turkey, Iran and the Himalayas with a population in Yemen. It occurs in northern, southern and parts of eastern Africa and also in eastern Indonesia, south-east Australia, Tasmania, New Zealand and Hawaii. It is found in North and Central America as well as Cuba and northern and western parts of South America.

It grows in rocky habitats such as cliffs, scree slopes, walls and mine waste. It grows from sea-level up to 3000 metres in North America while in the British Isles it reaches 870 metres. A. t. subsp. trichomanes prefers acidic rocks such as sandstone, basalt and granite. In Europe and North America it is most often found in mountainous areas and is commonest in the north. A. t. subsp. quadrivalens prefers calcareous rocks such as limestone and dolerite and often grows on the mortar in walls. It is commoner than A. t. subsp. trichomanes in much of Europe but is less widespread in North America, although it is present in southern North America where ssp. trichomanes is absent. A. t. pachyrachis is mainly found on limestone rocks and walls.

Cultivation details
Requires a well-drained position and lots of old mortar rubble in the soil[1]. Requires a humid atmosphere and some shade[28, 31]. A good plant for growing on a shady part of an old dry-stone or brick wall[K]. Plants are hardy to about -30°c[200]. Members of this genus are rarely if ever troubled by browsing deer[233].

Propagation
Spores - best sown as soon as they are ripe on the surface of a humus-rich sterilized soil. Keep the compost moist, preferably by putting a plastic bag over the pot. The spores usually germinate in the spring[1]. Spring sown spores germinate in 1 - 3 months at 15°c[134]. Pot on small clumps of plantlets as soon as they are large enough to handle and grow them on in light shade in a greenhouse. Keep the plants humid until they are well established. Once the plants are 15cm or more tall, plant them out into their permanent positions in the spring.
